Top 5 tips for nailing that job interview
At Talkr we see a lot of candidates and talk to a lot of clients about the first interview and nailing that first impression, and from our experience we have compiled a list of the Top 5 things to do and remember before going for that job interview.
1. Practice answering the most common interview questions
You can and should familiarise yourself with common interview questions, but don’t prepare by writing out your entire answer; instead, jot down a few notes or bullet points and keep them on hand for the interview itself. This will ensure you cover the bases without sounding like a robot. This prep work will help you clarify your thoughts, give you confidence and make you much more comfortable during the interview.
3. Focus and try to answer each question with an example
Focus on your attributes, your transferable skills, and your willingness to learn. With every answer try and give an example of what and how you have achieved something. Even if you’re a well-oiled interviewing machine, it’s essential to spend time thinking carefully about what skills, accomplishments, and interview answers will resonate with your interviewers most for this job. Your management abilities? Your creativity? Go back to your research and see what makes you most qualified.
4. Be positive and look keen by asking questions!
Being genuine during interview conversations can help employers easily relate to you. Showing positivity with a smile and upbeat attitude can help keep the interview light and constructive. You should also plan some questions that are very specific to the job and company. And prepare more than you think you’ll need—you don’t want to ask questions that have already been answered or be left without any backup options if the interviewer already touched on your first two questions during your conversation.
5. Avoid speaking negatively about your current or previous roles
Companies want to hire problem solvers who overcome tough situations. If you’re feeling discouraged about your current job, focus on talking about what you’ve gained from that experience and what you want to do next.
In the end, always remember to be yourself because your personality and authenticity is often what makes you the best fit for a role. Take the interviews as a place where you can sell your experience and knowledge and show yourself in the best, and truest, light.🤞
